DON'T sell in May and go away!

Don't sell in May and go away
Just buy in November, hold and stay
To an avid trader that might sound funny
But investing to hold will show you the money

For opportunity costs will surely abound
Should the trend not be your friend this time around
If that great stock you bought and sold in May
Has a special announcement and dividend to pay

The effect of compounding is extremely compelling
Over short term gains from buying and selling
Buy in November and always endeavour
To reinvest dividends and compound forever

Star in your own book

A poem about a company providing a unique opportunity for you to star in your own book

Have you ever wanted to be a star?
A character in a book
Perhaps driving a racing car
Or a pirate with a hook

A doctor in an ER
Or a vampire with a bite
Winning hidden treasure
Or a medieval knight

A hero of the wild wild west
Or in love with the one next door
Perhaps put your kids to the test
With magical worlds to explore

Put your loved one on centre stage
Your teenager at the prom
It’s all possible on any page

The terrorists are winning

A poem about how fear of terrorism is controlling our lives to the subtle victory of our enemies.

My teeth have that feel of furriness
My hair is a scruffy sight
My body odour is in duress
And my face doesn’t feel quite right

His teeth bright white a striking gent
He walks down a city street
His hair is slick and he wears a scent
His complexion looks a treat

So who am I and who is he?
I’m a traveler on a flight
He’s a terrorist living free
While I’m stripped of basic right

For my life is restricted whenever I fly
No liquids over 100ml in size
No toothpaste, hair gel, deodorant, or lotion can I buy
In case I mix them to the aircraft’s demise!

New safety rules and restrictions are rife
We think we are foiling their plight
We happily alter our quality of life
Giving terrorists the edge in this fight

Until fear ceases to control our minds
The war on terror is lost
They affect our lives but we are blind
It’s time to evaluate the cost

The cost of living and cost of our time
Fuel surcharges and security checks
One would think it’s us that committed a crime
As traveling becomes evermore complex

So until that tipping point comes in our lives
I’ll check my luggage and not take it onboard
I’ll wait patiently for my bag and hope it arrives
For with these new restrictions I must accord

slideshare.net

A verse about slideshare.net - a powerpoint file sharing website

You've heard of the craze that's hit the internet
People are blogging and sharing videos they compile
But if you haven't heard of www.slideshare.net
it is THE place to share your powerpoint file!

It has a fun edge and is creative as well
With an intellectual angle and business flair
There's even a competition of which we can tell
where you'll be judged on the files you share

There are scores of topics to keep you amused
From negotiating to business and even design
Answers to things on which you're confused
The magnitude is truly sublime

The site will have your mind propelled
The content will truly amaze
You'll feel motivated and somewhat compelled
to add your own files to this growing craze

Hangovers

A poem about what a hangover feels like!

You wake up with a thumping head
A spinning room beneath your bed
A dry mouth from last evening's drinks
Your clothes, your hair, everything stinks!

You feel that you could drink a lake
And there's that hungry feeling for goodness sake
But the distance to your refrigerator
Is something you'd rather deal with later

You see humour in your self-inflicted state
And think to yourself, "last night must have been great!"
You make it to the bathroom and look in the mirror
The sight you see puts you in quite a dither

You think, "this is the weekend I'm not wasting it sleeping!"
Your mind is saying one thing but your muscles are weeping
You eat some leftovers and drink water by the litre
You feel yourself beginning to peter

Those thoughts of making the most of your day
Have very quickly gone away
You feel you've hit a very rough trough
So you go back to bed and sleep it off!

The Correction of March 2007

This poem is about the stock market correction which took place in March 2007

A busy week with a downward trend
Is there an upswing around the bend?
I think - yes there is, and for this I have good reason
Companies are about to start a positive earnings season

Was it Chinese whispers that started the correction?
Words from Greenspan or media intervention?
As some traders on Wall Street reached for a hanky
There were some soothing words from Ben Bernanke

And after those words came a welcome rise
As traders bought back thinking it was wise
But the very next day those gains were erased
And those Wall Street traders left once again dazed

But sell as they might the ferocious bears
Who play so heavily on traders fears
Will soon succumb to investors pull
As they once again ride the all mighty bull

Who the bloody hell are we?

A poem about what it means to be Australian

It's been called the Great Southern Land
The land down under too
A country under Commonwealth command
Represented by an Emu and Kangaroo

From the tip up north near Darwin
In the Northern Territory
Right down to Tassie's Launceston
It's the great Australian story

And as countries go I guess
We're fairly young when compared
For just over 100 birthdays rest
Since federation was declared

But tell that to our Aboriginal folk
For on this land they've sat
100 odd years to them is a joke
They've been here a lot bloody longer than that

And on the subject of all of the folk
Who make up the populous here
There's a lot of mixed blood in Sheila and bloke
Who gather for a barbie and beer

There's British and Asians
There's Indians and Europeans
There are Middle East nations
Americans, Russians and Koreans

And that is the essence of this great place
Australia has a multicultural population
We've people representing almost every race
Who make up the face of our nation

And on the whole we're a peaceful bunch
Anything else would be un-Australian
A day at the beach or a Melbourne Cup lunch
To not practice mateship would be somewhat alien

We cherish our sport and that's for sure
And we love to give anything a go
And taking it easy is at our core
In fact, it's almost a national motto

But that's not to say we don't work hard
An honest day's work earns us our grub
We're diggers willing to go the extra yard
We get the job done before hitting the pub

And our mateship is not just contained to our shores
We back up our allies all over the world
We've our fair share of soldiers fighting in wars
You'll always find an Aussie flag unfurled

So Aussies at home and Aussies abroad
Stand up and give yourselves a hand
For your contribution we can applaud
You're an important part of the Great Southern Land

A poem about broadband

I have a friend whom i often chat with
she only has dial-up though
If she had broadband she'd have more bandwidth
and wouldn't always suddenly go

Stock market investing

Forget about making money fast
Or get rich quick schemes that never last
Investing in the stock market will give you returns
And dividends will ensure your investment earns

Forget about trading for a quick profit
Hoping that hot tip is about to rocket
Investing means choosing stocks for two reasons
Capital growth and income to get through the seasons

And sticking with this theme of two
Timing and yield will see you through
That means buying when the stock price is low
with high dividend yield that’s poised to grow

So don’t be tempted to just trade like the rest
You must be deliberate and patient to invest
Growth and income are then obtainable
And a self-sufficient lifestyle will be sustainable

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility
What's it all about in reality?
Also known widely as CSR
How the corporate world can raise the bar

It's about how a company makes its money
Not just about philanthropy
It shouldn't fall under public relations
And it doesn't belong in communications

It really requires a dedicated committee
to get right down to the nitty gritty
It requires a CSR strategy formation
for the benefit of the organisation

It's about how a company goes beyond
and to their stakeholders how they respond
Showing responsibility is sustainable
and ensures that profits are obtainable

And on that point it should be stressed
CSR should not put profits in duress
It's about making money responsibly
not becoming a corporate charity

Philanthropy is a part of CSR
As are your policies about HR
Supply chain and how you source your goods
How you treat your community's livelihood

Stakeholders are really the key to all this
They're anyone with an interest in your business
But if you find all of this a little too candid
There is the ISO 26000 guidance standard

CSR makes extremely good business sense
It gives all involved great confidence
Because of its nature being so broad
It's imperative that business should accord
